Frequently asked questions
Counselling is generally sought out by people who feel stuck in challenging situations or are experiencing overwhelming emotional states that impact their daily lives. It can be helpful for specific issues like anxiety, stress, trauma, grief, relationship challenges, family dynamics, work concerns or health issues, as well as for those looking to enhance their personal growth, self-awareness and resilience. The counselling space provides an opportunity to explore deeper aspects of yourself which can lead to a shift in mindset and a sense of liberation. Ultimately anyone who desires support and growth in their mental health and emotional well-being can benefit from counselling. If you are unsure whether you would benefit from counselling do reach out. I offer a 15-minute free video call so you can decide whether counselling is right for you.
Counsellors and psychologists are very similar in the theories and therapy techniques we use, but a key distinction lies in their focus: Psychology often focuses on a diagnostic model while counselling focuses on the emotional impact on a person's life. Counsellors generally don't diagnose but do regularly deal with people who have been diagnosed or are experiencing signs, symptoms or behaviors associated with various of common psychological disorders and conditions. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who diagnose and treat mental health issues with an emphasis on biological factors and medication.
Counselling can last from a few sessions to several years. I offer both short-term goal-oriented processes and longer in-depth processes focused on personal growth and positive life changes. If you have any wishes regarding the duration of your counselling journey, please let me know, and I will work to structure a suitable plan.
In the first session we get to know each other. I get to understand more about the challenges that brought you to counselling and you get a further sense of how I work with clients. We discuss your goals and what you would like to achieve from your sessions and at the end of the session we can both decide whether it makes sense to move forwards.
Absolutely. All information shared during counselling sessions is kept strictly confidential, except in situations where there is risk to yourself or others, or in legal circumstances where I would be required by law to disclose information. I follow the ethical guidelines of the Australian Counselling Association.
